December Activities

Pre-K and Kindergarten

The Pre-K and Kindergarten classes made snowflake decorations and penguin decorations for the winter concert.  The penguins were made from paper plates and were used as a direction following activity.  Students did one step at a time, following what the teacher asked them to do.  The snowflakes were built with popsicle sticks and were a review of cool colors and of symmetry.

Grades 1 & 2

The first and second grade classes practiced weaving patterns.  They used strips of magazines to weave colorful patterns in a mitten template.  The mittens were used to decorate the gym for the winter concert.  They also reviewed cool colors and practiced making a winter landscape using tempera paint.  They made snowmen from fingerprints and added yarn and toothpicks for details.

Grades 3 & 4

The third and fourth grade classes learned about Chicago architecture this month!  They identified the Willis (Sears) Tower, the Hancock Tower, the Trump Tower, the 900 North Michigan Building, the Smurfit-Stone Building, and several other landmarks.  They used a wax resist method to make a snowy scene of the skyline.  They then used a plastic plate to create a snow globe structure for a winter decoration.

Grades 5 & 6

The fifth and sixth graders finished up their weaving project this month.  It took a lot of hard work, but they are now weaving experts!
