Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
In March, the art classes started the month by celebrating the birthday of author and artist Dr. Seuss! A variety of activities included making Horton elephant ears to wear, clovers with a "Whoville" on them, storyboards of Mulberry Street, and giant coloring pages with characters from some of his most beloved stories.
Pre K and Kindergarten have begun springtime activities. They will be making bird nests, kites and other activities to welcome the new season.
Grades 1 and 2 are continuing their study of quilts and how these quilts can be considered art. They are making patterns, arranging squares and choosing color combinations for their projects. They are learning how quilts can tell a story and how to tell a story using a quilt. They have been learning about the quiltmakers of Gee's Bend and how these women have contributed to the world of art.
Grades 3 and 4 are working on an illustrated version of the Maya Angelou poem "Life Doesn't Frighten Me". They have practiced making collages like the famous artist Romare Bearden, and they will explore this medium as they create collages illustrating each line of this powerful poem. They looked at how Jean Michel Basquiat illustrated the same poem to get inspiration.
Grades 5 and 6 are continuing to learn about the grid method of drawing. They have been making portraits of many famous people from Michael Jackson to Barack Obama! This method was used by famous artists like Albrecht Durer, Leonardo Davinci, and more recently by Chuck Close.
